Dr. Juul

Yesterday, I “successfully defended my dissertation”, so I am now a Ph.D..

I think it went as well as you can reasonably hope for, though it’s amazing how quickly 4 hours can pass. (Rumor has it that the people in my family who are not into computer games experienced time as passing rather slowly, so it goes.)

And then big party afterwards, slept late.

The people at the game research center gave me an Xbox. I’ve resisted the Xbox for a while, among other things because it’s so damn big, but now I have the big three (+ Dreamcast) all lined up.

Jesper’s law: You know you’re in the right line of work when the gift from your colleagues is a game console.

Thanks to everybody who made this possible, the friends who supported me in different ways, and to all the people who provided interesting discussion and comments during the process. You rule! Game on.

  1. Well done, Jesper! Big congratulations!

Am I right in saying that you are the first Phd. in pure ludology? I know there are others on the way, and I know there are Phds who study games in relation to their Phd (which wasn’t initially about games), but are you the first? Err. Wow. That question could be really insulting to the guy who was first if you’re not. Oops.

  2. Thanks all. And remember to address me as “Dr. Juul” in the future.
I have in fact just used the title when booking a hotel online (a rather cheap hotel), and it feeeels good.

Only problem now is video game overload: I want to play SSX3 (which I just got), Halo (which I just got on the XBox but never got very far in), Zelda: The Wind Waker (favorite procrastination while preparing for the defense), Super Monkey Ball 2 (just got my copy back)…

    See you all soon!

  3. Congratulations Jesper! I will begin my doctoral studies this year and I also woould like to focus on games, especially online games and their business models. It’s good to see that there are more people out there that have already defended their dissertation on this subject. Good luck on your work! T. Wozniak, Poland.

  4. Congratulations! Nice to have a genuine doctor of ludology here in Scandinavia! I’m sure you have helped advance the field of game studies and made academic life a bit easier for others with an interest in computer games. Good work!
